Jordan Mackampa

Der Londoner Soul-Darling Jordan Mackampa kündigt heute sein neues Album mit dem Titel "Welcome Home, Kid!" an, das am 16. Februar 2024 erscheint. Am 31.08. erscheint die erste Vorab-Single "Proud Of You".

In dem gefühlvollen Song "Proud Of You" führt Mackampa ein Gespräch mit seinem inneren Kind, das seine Geschichte in jedem Lebensalter erzählt. Dies wird untermalt von einer vom Klavier geführten Produktion, verziert von Streichern und Bläsern. Jordan erklärt:

“This was a long overdue conversation I needed to have with myself, through my inner child. We go through life ageing without realising that even at 28, 29, 35, 41, we are still all the years before that. Some of my most life-changing events happened to me at times I was too young to comprehend what was going on, and then again when my sense of self in my teen years was fully conscious of situations. All whilst my inner child was still there not getting the support it needed because I hadn’t healed any old wounds, and was watching its oldest self suffer too. So I wanted to write a song that told me at every age, how proud I am of us for getting this far, despite every hurdle we had to jump —though there’s still work to be done, it doesn’t minimise the growth it took to get here.”

Sein neues Album führt Jordan zurück zu seiner Liebe für R&B, Soul, Funk und Gospel und verweist auf Dru Hill und Blackstreet. Dabei entsteht ein neuer Klang, der an seine früheren Soundcloud-Arbeiten und die Nostalgie seiner Kindheit erinnert. Es ist ein mutiges Album und präsentiert einen äußerst selbstbewussten Künstler, der sich nicht länger davor scheut, seine Blackness, seine Queerness oder seine sexuelle Ausdrucksweise in all ihren Formen zu zeigen. Den Weg zu diesem Punkt zu finden, hat Jordan Jahrzehnte des Wachstums, der Geduld und schmerzhafter Lektionen gekostet. Nun kann er stolz zu seiner Schwarzen Identität stehen. „Welcome Home, Kid!“ erzählt die Geschichte, wie er zu diesem Zustand des Selbstwertgefühls gelangt ist, sowie die vielfältigen, komplexen und schönen Perspektiven dieser Schwarzen Identität.

Offen und ehrlich thematisiert Jordan Sex, Intimität, das Impostor-Syndrom und wie er gesunde Liebe, toxische Herzschmerzen, Freundschaften und Vergebung navigiert. Das zentrale Thema dieses Albums ist dabei die Introspektive:

“This was a big theme for me in writing a lot of these songs because no one else has lived life in my shoes, I really had to take other peoples’ opinions & stories out of the writing and put myself at the forefront of everything. Which in turn, made me put the guitar down more and stand centre stage naked in a way. This new album for me feels even more personal now - I use more self language of “I” over “we” because all of these stories are about me and my life in even more depth than the first record touched upon, whilst covering more bases either through my own first person story telling of something current I’m dealing with or a past situation I’m using music to heal through. The debut was me figuring out shit, this album is me putting the last puzzle piece on the board.”

„Welcome Home, Kid!“ ist das zweite Album von Jordan Mackampa, nach dem 2020er-Debüt "Foreigner" und der darauf folgenden EP "Come Around" im Jahr 2021. Am 21.09. spielt Jordan auf dem Reeperbahn Festival in Hamburg, am 04.11. auf dem New Fall Festival in Düsseldorf.
